Typically a Revolutionary War soldier's diet would consist of hardtack, an extremely hard square of bread and, if they were lucky, salted meat. Hardtack was hard enough to chip teeth, and so it was often dipped in water, rum, or stew in order to soften it up. A continuous shortage of salt early in the war meant that soldiers had to rely on fresh meat, either from sulters or from cows simply brought into camp to slaughter. As the war moved south, and the British cut off their supplies, conditions progressively got worse and worse.
