In the 19th century labor unions developed mostly in response to what?

Labor unions were created by workers to protect them from abuse by employers. Before labor unions people did not have set work days, overtime, breaks, set wages, due process when a problem comes up, not be fired at will , weekends off, holidays off, insurance or retirement . Work place injuries go up without union protection to insure that the work place is free of hazards that can harm the workers. Wages are lower in nonunion shops, and workers are not represented when a problem comes up with management . Today, many of the rights gained by workers are slowly fading away as unions come under attack.

What are some of the hardships and problems faced by factory workers according to the testimony received by the Sadler Commission?

Factory workers, as highlighted in the testimony received by the Sadler Commission, faced numerous hardships, including extremely long working hours, often exceeding 12 hours a day, and hazardous working conditions that posed serious health risks. Many children and women were employed in factories, enduring physical and emotional abuse, as well as exploitation through minimal wages. Additionally, the lack of proper ventilation and safety measures led to frequent accidents and injuries, further exacerbating their plight. These testimonies underscored the urgent need for reform in labor practices.

Who had the better life the slave or the factory worker?

The factory worker. Sure the risk of losing an arm without worker's comp and your family starving is not good, at least they were free and working for a sub-par wage. A slave would be lucky to get a bowl to call their own let alone a wage.
