Bennelong helped develop some level of understanding between the English colonialists who established the city of Sydney in 1788. He was a local Aboriginal man who made contact with the English and sought to learn and understand their customs and culture. He differed from other Aboriginal men of the same era, such as Pemulwouy, who saw the Europeans as invaders and fought an active guerrilla war against them.

Bennelong was generally well liked by those in charge of Sydney. However, some might argue that he did not have any long term achievements. He never helped develop a treaty with the English, and the relations between Aborigines and the English soon deteriorated quite significantly.

Bennelong also suffered the fate of many indigenous Australians - becoming addicted to alcohol and dying as a result of this addiction.
