Socially- Social and political stability marked the Meiji era. Japanese people were content with the rights their leaders were willing to give them. 1920’s- situation changed. Economic development, universal education, and new ideas from the West had all contributed to a change in attitude among the Japanese. Industrial workers organized labor unions and went out on strike for higher wages and better working conditions. Tenant farmers organized unions and demanded lower agricultural rents. Urban intellectuals and university students argued that democracy was the wave of the future. They organized a movement for universal manhood suffrage, which they saw as an essential first stop toward promoting democracy in Japan. Other Japanese became involved in socialism and communism. These people protested the government’s expansionist policies and tried to organize a revolutionary political movement in Japan. During the 1930’s, the military established almost complete control over the government and had many political enemies assassinated and communists persecuted. Culturally- Some young Japanese people began to question the traditional values of their society. These values required that young people obey and respect their parents, especially their fathers. When making decisions-taking a job or choosing a husband or wife-young people had to accept their parents’ choice. And military training taught young soldiers and sailors to follow orders without question or hesitation, even if following those orders might lead to their deaths. Japanese military considered it an honor to die in battle for the emperor. Few young Japanese rejected these values openly. In their private lives, they tried to escape and experience greater freedom. They listened to jazz and played Baseball. Young women in the cities cut their hair short like the flappers in the United States and refused to wear the traditional female attire of a long kimono. Eager to learn about other societies, young people cleared the bookstores of every Western novel. Japanese novels that dealt with the loneliness and frustration of individuals in Japanese society enjoyed great popularity among the young. During the 1930’s, the military intensified indoctrination and censorship in education and media. There are also many things happening in Japan at this time economically, politically, and religiously. However those topics bore me, so you can do your own research from there. :]
