The objective of the Battle of Stalingrad was the Germans wanted to capture the town named after the Prime Minister of Russia and then cross the Volga river in order to continue their advance into Russia.

The Germans lost the battle and the German VI Army was surrounded and surrendered. The Germans had to retreat in order to re-group. Stalingrad was where the Russians stopped the advance of the German army and they began to push them back out of Russia over the next year.
