It was used for a brief time by the statistics department of the university. Atanasoff & Berry were called off to war work elsewhere and abandoned the machine. The university needed more classroom space during the war and finding ABC too large to fit through the door (by an inch or two) cut the machine up and scrapped most of it.

John Vincent Atanasoff was 34 years old when he invented the ABC in an Illinois bar in the winter of 1937-38. Clifford Edward Berry did not become involved until 1939, he was a graduate student "hired" by Atanasoff to help with final circuit design and assembly.
