Custer's scouts discover the Indian village, and warn him of its immense size, advising him to wait on the other columns approaching the area. Custer fears the Indians may escape, and decides to attack, underestimating the size of the encampment. He splits his forces into three columns, under the commands of himself, Major Reno, and Captain Benteen. Benteen takes the pack train, and is told to move west along the ridges, to block any escape. Reno is told to attack the village on the south end, and Custer would attack from the north, squeezing the Indians into a vise. Reno opens the fight, and is soon overwhelmed by large numbers of Lakota and Cheyenne warriors, and retreats to a bluff overlooking the river, where they dig in, and fight from cover. Meanwhile, Custer attacked the middle of the huge village, and is driven back to a ridge known today as "Last Stand Hill". Benteen, after receiving a message to return and bring the pack train, returns to Reno's besieged troops, and aids them in holding back the Indians, although by this time most have left Reno to join in the fight against Custer. Custer's column is wiped out to the last man, and the Indians begin to return to Reno's position. Beenteen and Reno hold the Indians off, and the Indians begin to dismantle the huge village to move, as word came in of General Terry's troops approaching. The Seventh was saved from almost certain destruction by Terry's men, as the Indians could have eventually overrun Reno and Benteen. Estimates of warriors in the village range from 1800 to over 3000, compared to the 600 mustered by the Seventh Cavalry.
