At Appomattox Court House, on 9 April 1865, Ulysses S Grant (Union commander) accepted the surrender of the Confederate Army led by Robert E Lee, thus ending the American Civil War.

On 14 April 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater, while attending a performance of "Our American Cousin".

Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to U.S. Grant. It is taken as the effective end of the Civil War, though some units were in action for a few more weeks.

Some have questioned why he did not order every other Confederate army to surrender at the same time, as he was a General-in-Chief surrendering to another General-in-Chief. If he was only surrendering his own army, he should have surrendered it to George Meade, commander of the army that defeated him. But that was price Meade had to pay for having his boss travelling beside him in a mobile HQ.
