In the United States, the president was Andrew Jackson, and in 1835, a man suffering from what today would be considered mental illness tried (unsuccessfully) to assassinate him. In New York City, a massive fire destroyed as many as 700 buildings. The "Great Moon Hoax" occurred-- a newspaper, the New York Sun, hoaxed its readers by claiming a famous scientist had discovered life on the moon; some of the techniques used to fool the public are still used even today. I enclose a link to more about it, because it's a great story. In 1836, the Battle of the Alamo occurred. The Wisconsin territory was created, and Arkansas became the 25th state of the United States. Former President James Madison died at age 85. And Betsy Ross, the woman whom legend says made the first American flag, died at age 84.
