They were shut down when the Germans and other powers surrendered at the end of WWII. The prisoners were given food, clothing and medical care and many of them went on to live their lives in other countries. The guards underwent trials and years of prison. Prisoners were forcibly moved to avoid having the Allies (& the world) find out exactly what had been going on. Those to ill or infirm were executed or merely left to die. In some cases, the SS would abandon a camp, leaving the prisoners to their fate.
