There actually was no year '0'. The Gregorian calendar was not implemented until much after this time, so the separate sects of the world (Rome, Judea, etc.) would be using different calendars.
The year '1' of BC/BCE would be a year before the birth of Christ, and the year '1' of AD/CE would be the year Christ was born, according to the Church. Most scholars today agree this estimation is probably at least 3 years off, but I would argue it is close enough.
