Admirl Karl Dönitz became the new Chancellor of Germany, and his short-lived government was in the city of Flensburg near the border with Denmark. Dönitz concluded a total surrender a few days later, which officially ended World War II in Europe (Japan would surrender a few months later, ending the other part of the war). Just prior to Hitler's suicide, he had become angry at his second-in-command, Hermann Göring, and basically fired him, so Dönitz became the new "heir".

When he killed himself, Hitler was sheltered in a command bunker underneath the middle of Berlin, along with much of his senior staff and aids. Hitler ordered some of the staffers to burn his corpse so that it could not be defiled, as had happened to Mussolini a few days prior. The charred remains of his corpse were supposedly found by the Soviets, who subsequently hid it.

When he killed himself, Berlin was being invaded by the Soviet Army. So for Berlin, it really didn't change anything. The Battle of Berlin continued for a couple days after his death, and minor fighting continued until Germany officially surrendered on May 8th.
