The point of the fourth of July is to celebrate the independence of the Americans.
It means that the rights and ideas set forth in the Declaration of Independence are what we should strive for, even though we may sometimes fall short of hitting the mark.
There had been revolutions prior to the American Revolution. But this was the first time a group of people outlined in writing (the Declaration) the reasons they were revolting and declaring that they were an independent state (nation).
Lincoln was referring to the declaration of independence from Britain but the colonists in 1776.
The first peaceful approach the colonists took before drafting the Declaration of Independence was holding the First Continental Congress to make requests to stop the taxations the king was making. The second peaceful approach was making and sending an Olive Branch Petition to the king, which he didn't care for, therefore bringing forth the creation of the Declaration of Independence.
On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 American colonists who were requesting their indepedence from England. In doing so they became enemies of England and King George III - many lost their homes, were chased by the English army, their families were relocated and were never found. These men took a chance with their lives speaking out. That is what our Independence Day is all about.
