He died of lung cancer. He was also diagnosed with Buerger's disease, a condition attributable to smoking that causes the capillaries in extremities (e.g., fingers and toes) to collapse and cut off blood flow. The condition often leads to amputation. In light of George VI's diagnosis, Buerger's disease (as well as gout") became known as "the King's disease."
