The proper names of the two countries was 'Deutsche Demokratische Republik' (DDR = German Democratic Republic) and 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland' (=BRD, Federal Republic of Germany). East Berlin was part of the DDR. West Berlin was not part of the BRD, it was a separate entity.
