Ben Franklin was pulled out of school by his father at 7 years old and apprentice to a candle maker. Franklin hated it. He always was a thinker and reader. His father would beat him if he found him reading. As a young man he invented things and this continued all of his life. Finally his father allowed him to leave the candle maker and become an apprentice to his brother’s printing business. When his brother was arrested by the British for publishing seditious letters in his newspaper Ben took over the business and ran it. After serving his sentence his brother returned to run the paper and forced Ben to sign another 7 year apprenticeship. At this point he was 17 and didn’t want to do seven more years as an apprentice so he ran away and ended up in Philadelphia where he lived most of his life. Yet, he also owned property in London.
