He was the first black US Senator to serve a full term in Congress.

Blanche K. Bruce (1841-1898) was the son of a slaveowner and one of his slaves, and was legally a slave himself until freed as a boy by his biological father. After the Civil War, he served as sergeant-at-arms for the Mississippi state senate, and was elected US senator by the legislature in 1874, as one of the last Southern Republican officials of the Reconstruction Era. He served from 1875 to 1881, and in 1879 became the first and only former slave to preside over the US Senate.
