In white American culture it is normal for people to have a Christian or first name and a family or surname. This comes straight from post-medieval European naming traditions and is normal practice today in all English-speaking countries.

Native American naming traditions are entirely different. The idea of a family name (surname) was completely unknown until it was introduced by missionaries and government agents during the reservation period. Before that most native Americans only had one or more given names (first names); Tecumseh was really called Tekoomsē in Shawnee and this was his complete and full name.

Many natives were given more than one name during their lifetimes, or changed their name because of some important religious experience or war exploit; but they still did not have family names (last names) until such things were forced upon them in the late 1800s - often this was in order to make the issue of reservation rations simpler for Indian agents. Tecumseh was never issued with a last name in this way.
