The only similarity is the idea of a republic in which citizens vote to elect representatives that represent the people in government. The USSR was a communist state in which the economics are handled by the govermment, and there is no personal land owner ship. The US is unlike this, and has a mixed economy; the government only becomes involved in the economy when it needs to prevent it from totally falling out, and land ownership is in the hands of the individual citizens.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolved for good on December 25, 1991, breaking into its constituent republics: the European republics of Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova; the trans-Caucasus republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia; the trans-Uralic republics of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan; the Baltic republics of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia; and the huge multi-ethnic, trans-continental republic of the Russian Federation. These nations still exist, recognizing the same borders that divided them as SSRs, although there are political tensions within and between these nations that may cause future changes in the geography of the area, for example in Chechnya (within the Russian Federation), between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, and between Georgia and the Russian Federation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The primary difference is that anyone born on US soil is considered a citizen, while in Rome only adult males were. The two republics actually have little in common except the name of the form of government. The Roman culture and concerns were different from ours.

The term "republic" is rather general, and is used to indicate a state in which the public can elect or nominate a ruler instead of having the state be ruled by a monarch. Currently, 135 countries claim to be republics. There are many different types of republics, though. For example, there are socialist republics, communist republics, mercantile republics, Calvinist republics, democratic republics, liberal republics, and even Islamic republics. The United States operates as a democratic republic, which is a state that has publicly-elected rulers, and in which all members of the public are guaranteed the same rights, even despite minority status.
A union republic is a sovereign state within a federal union, an autonomous republic is a self-governing subdivision within a national state, and an autonomous region is a region with a degree of self-governance within another administrative unit or country. Union republics are typically higher in status and independence compared to autonomous republics and regions.
