Graf Spee
It was third of ,September 1939 when the German pocket battleship Graf Spee shelled Poland and the Germans performed the Blitzreig.
It is generally assumed that the British Won the Battle of the River Plate. The Germans lost the pocket battleship Graf Spee where as the British only had 1 heavy cruiser Exeter with heavy damage and 2 light cruisers Ajax and Achilles received minor damage. The initial engagement started on December 13th, 1939 when Graf Spee sighted Exeter, Ajax and Achilles. She correctly identified Exeter but misidentified the two light cruisers as destroyers and believed they were on convoy escort duty. Exeter was soon badly damaged and was forced to retire under smoke but not before she and the two light cruisers had damaged Graf Spee. Graf Spee was forced to run toward neutral Uraguay and the city of Montevideo followed in pursuit by Ajax and Achilles.Under international law Graf Spee was only permitted to dock for 72 hours and make limited repairs. The British Embassy got to work releasing false information that a much larger force of the battle cruiser Renound and the aircraft carrier Ark Royalwere steaming quickly to the area and would be there in time to engage the German ship. In fact in reality they would not have arrived until December 19th, too late to catch Graf Spee. Ajax and Achilles were joined by the heavy cruiser Cumberland on December 14th, and all 3 ships made smoke that could clearly be seen from the Harbour. On December 17th Graf Spee lifted her anchor and set sail. Low on ammo the Captain of Graf Spee, Hans Langsdorff had ordered most of the crew off and had left with only had a skeleton crew on board. A few minutes later just outside the harbour the crew entered life boats and detonated demolition charges sending the Graf Spee to the bottom.
German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee was created on 1936-01-06.

Cloth flags are easy to fake. Graf Spee was a battlecruiser with 11 inch guns, and NOT A BATTLESHIP. Even the old Russian battleships from the Tsushima battle in 1905 had bigger guns than Graf Spee, they had 12 inch guns, and "they" were 30 years old when Graf Spee was built!
