Lee was brilliant at the aggressive elastic defence. He was good at reading the opposing general's intentions, and countering with audacious moves, especially when Jackson was alive to carry out Lee's orders. He was less good on the strategic offensive, where his logistical failings let him down, and his emotions overrode his reason, at least as far as Pickett's Charge was concerned.
