So much depends on the industry, the size of the organization and the complexity of the IT environment. Many argue, the role of the CIO is changing and some say it has already changed. The changes in many organizations have contributed to many CIO's being demoted or fired leaving a director of technology to handle the operational function of IT. Others see the role as morphing into a true business leader less focused on the technical and operational stuff but instead of its applications. There are some ways to assess which one an organization might be better suited with in the links provided.
