Why did US President Lincoln invite Allan Pinkerton to the White House in September 1862?

Since Allan Pinkerton was the unofficial chief of intelligence for George B. McClellan, Lincoln invited Pinkerton to the White House to question him about the fighting conditions on the eastern battle fronts. He made it clear that he was not looking to find any faults with McClellan. Lincoln told Pinkerton that he just wanted his views on various military matters, and thanked Pinkerton for his efforts at South Mountain and Antietam. Basically, Pinkerton informed the president that actually very little intelligence had been done for the past few months. With this information, Lincoln was certain that Lee's escape from Maryland was the fault of McClellan.
