Originally the plebeians were the commoners; that is anyone who was not a patrician. The patricians were the Roman aristocracy. The term applied to both rich and poor commoners. Later the rich plebeians were given equite (cavalryman) status. This was the second highest rank in Roman society. The term plebeian came to refer to the poor. These people struggled to eke out a living were often unemployed or underemployed and, when working, underpaid. Some of them were market stall holders or peddlers. Many relied on cash handouts by the rich in exchange for errands, odd jobs and political support. They also lived in overcrowded rooms on the top floors of apartment blocks which did not have running water. They went there only to sleep and lived outdoors. They ate at eating outlets, went to outdoors public toilets and to the public baths and spent their free time playing games and gambling in the streets or at wine bars.

What changes were made in romes government as a result of demands by the plebeians?

The main changes were around the plebeian tribunes and the plebeian council which were formed by the plebeian movement in its first rebellion (the 1st plebeian secession). The council and the tribunes were recognised, but the laws voted by the plebeian council were not recognised as laws binding on all citizens, including the patricians. Eventually they were recognised as binding on all, and the plebeian tribunes became the main proposers of laws and the plebeian council the main deliberative body. The leaders of the plebeian movement gained access to all offices of state, the senate and the priesthoods. These leaders were rich plebeians who were co-opted into what became a patrician-plebeian oligarchy with the help of liberal patricians who supported this development. The rich plebeians then turned the backs on the poor plebeians who had been the driving force of the plebeian movement. The economic grievances of the poor plebeians were not addressed properly.

What Led to the conflict of the Orders?

Patricians were allowed to stand for election to political office, but over time these laws were revoked, and eventually all offices were opened to the Plebeians. Since most individuals who were elected to political office were given membership in the Roman Senate, this development helped to transform the senate from a body of Patricians into a body of Plebeian and Patrician aristocrats. This development occurred at the same time that the Plebeian legislative assembly, the Plebeian Council, was acquiring additional power. At first, its acts ("plebiscites") applied only to Plebeians, although after 449 BC, these acts began to apply to both Plebeians and Patricians. It wasn't until 287 BC, however, that the Patrician senators lost their last check over the Plebeian Council. However, the Patricio-Plebeian aristocracy in the senate still retained other means by which to control the Plebeian Council, in particular the closeness between the Plebeian Tribunes and the senators. While this conflict would end in 287 BC with the Plebeians having acquired political equality with the Patricians, the plight of the average Plebeian had not changed. A small number of aristocratic Plebeian families had emerged, and most Plebeian politicians came from one of these families. answer from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_of_the_Orders Patricians were allowed to stand for election to political office, but over time these laws were revoked, and eventually all offices were opened to the Plebeians.
