I have just finished a project for school in which i had to make a trench so i can answer confidently. i hope lol :s
a dugout is an area were soldiers could retire-a simple shelter built/dug into the side of the trench. it gave some protection, but was mainly designed as a place to sleep under cover. Officers and other higher ranked army officials would have larger, more bunker like dug outs, some fitted with bunk beds to provide better sleeping qualities.
please, anyone, correct me if i am wrong.
