Many wars have occurred in Ireland. Various tribes in Ireland were constantly at war until the Island was conquered by the Puritans in the 1650s. When James I became King of England he moved a number of Protestants to Northern Ireland. In order to defend themselves agains the Irish they created the stockade. A number of these settlers then went to Jamestown in the Virginia colony and brought the stockade with them. That fortification created in Northern Ireland enabled the colony to survive against Indian attacks and it enabled Americans to spread west across the nation.
