What was the Partoon System?
The Partoon System, established during the early years of the British Empire in India, was a form of administrative management that involved local landlords or zamindars collecting taxes on behalf of the colonial government. This system aimed to streamline tax collection and enhance revenue efficiency while leveraging existing local power structures. Although it provided the British with a steady income, it often led to exploitation of peasants by zamindars, resulting in social and economic hardships for the rural population. The Partoon System ultimately contributed to significant agrarian unrest in India.
