The US did not make a serious effort to reach space until after the launch of Sputnik I in 1957. However, the launch of the Soviet satellite created the impression among world powers that the Soviet Union was surpassing the United States as a technological power, so in response to it the US government put significantly more effort into its space program. NASA was founded in 1958.
