The Chinese government was not interested in acceding to the demands of the protesters and knew that it could kill them with impunity since the Chinese economy was strong enough to withstand external blowback. As a result, there was no better way for the protesters to deal with the Chinese government; they were not going to be successful anyway.You also have to realize that the majority of Chinese people in 1989 were actually relatively happy with the Communist government and so a large scale, grassroots revolution was never going to take hold there as it could in Poland or other Eastern European countries or Mongolia.
