The force is called magnetism.

What did Benjamin Franklin discover with a magnet?

he found out that lighting is electricity by taking a kite and attaching in to a metal pole

Who was William Gilbert and what did he do?

The field of Physics, Sir William Gilbert is known for his work with magnetic fields. He observed that1) Magnetic field lines around a bar magnet, which can be drawn using a small magnet and iron filings on a piece of paperand2) Magnetic field lines drawn on a world map / globe with information obtained from the British Navyare very similar. He was the first to discover that the cause of the earth's magnetic field was internal and not external. His discovery in simple words is that the Earth Behaves as if it contains a magnet inside .The gilbert, a unit of magnetic force, is named after him. There is also a comprehensive school named after him.

What is there inside a magnet?

iron

How did ancient civilisations use magnets?

The Greeks and the Chinese had the early discovery of the properties of lodestone. Pliny wrote of a hill near the river Indus that was made entirely of a stone that attracted iron. For many years magnetite was surrounded by superstition and to have magical powers. It was thought it could heal the sick, frighten evil spirits, and attract and dissolve ships made of iron. People thought there were whole islands of magnetic nature that could attract ships with iron nails and that when ships disappeared at sea some were thought to have been pulled by these islands. Archimedes is suppose to have used lodestones to remove nails from enemy ships and sinking them. The Chinese made the first mariner's compass 4500 years ago which was a splinter of lodestone floating on a surface tension of water. Peregrinus and Gilbert Peter Peregrinus is credited with the first attempt to separate fact from fiction in 1269. He wrote a letter describing everything that was known about magnetite. However, it wasn't until 1600 that William Gilbert made significant progress in understanding magnetism. He was the first to realize that the Earth was a giant magnet and that they could be made by beating wrought iron. In 1820 Hans Christian Oersted showed that magnetism was related to electricity by bringing a wire carrying an electric current close to a magnetic compass which caused the deflection of the compass needle. It is now known that whenever current flows there will be an associated magnetic field in the surrounding space, or more generally that the movement of any charged particle will produce a magnetic field. It was in 1862 that James Clark Maxwell established beyond a doubt that there was a inter relationship between electricity and magnetism.

What is the difference between permanent pole and temporary pole?

a Temporary Magnet lose its magnetism quickly, a Permanent Magnet is hard and it keeps it magnetism

When a wire carries an electric current it products a?

It produces a magnetic field. Vice versa, when you run a magnet past a wire you generate an electric current. Electricity and magnetism are related. If you have electricity you can generate magnetism, if you have a magnet you can produce electricity.

How do you produce electricity from magnetism?

One way you can produce electricity is by using a U shaped magnet and pushing a metal string in the U shaped magnet! You use a galvanometer attached to the string and when you push it, it will become electrical energy! (A galvanometer measures electricity.)

What is the difference between a permanent magnet and a temporary magnet?

Temporary magnet: good example is an electromagnet. It maintains magnetic attraction only so long as an electric current surrounds it. Permanent magnet: most common. Example: bar magnet. Will maintain magnetic properties for quite a while, although they can be eventually demagnetized.

What is a temporary magnet called?

A temporary magnet is called a soft magnet. It can be easily magnetized and demagnetized, unlike a permanent magnet that retains its magnetism for a longer period of time.

What does the electro magnet prove about electricity?

An electro magnet proves that Electricity and Magnetism always co-exist in nature

What is an example of electricity and magnetism being used?

An electro-magnet.

How do you make a temporary magnet?

To make a temporary magnet, you can rub a piece of iron or steel with a permanent magnet. This process aligns the magnetic domains in the material, creating a temporary magnetic field. To enhance the temporary magnetism, you can increase the number of times you rub the material with the permanent magnet.

Can a magnet be used to produce electricity?

A spinning magnet inside a coil of copper wire will produce electricity.

What do you call a magnet that only lasts a short time?

A temporary magnet is a magnet that only retains its magnetism for a limited period before losing its magnetic properties.

Permanent and temporary magnets?

A temporary magnet is something that has been magnetized that won't stay a magnet for long, such as a paperclip that you have rubbed with a magnet. A Permanent magnet is usually a Lodestone that is found naturally or is manufactured by a company. Permanent magnets are always magnetic.

How a loudspeaker works?

A loud speaker (like other speakers) produce sound (which is actually vibrations in the air heard by the ear) with a permanent magnet and a temporary magnet in wire form that is wrapped around the permanent magnet. (or a magnet that can be turned on and off by electricity) the speaker translates the sound into a series of electrical currents and then produces the electricity to alter the temporary magnet and making the magnets vibrate and in turn vibrates the air.
