What is a audiometer used for?

An audiometer is used by a hearing instrument specialist or an audiologist to test and measure a person's hearing acuity or hearing level. It has an array of frequencies usually ranging from 250Hz - 8000Hz with decibel levels from 0-110 or sometimes 120dB. The patient is put in a sound proof booth with headphones, a tone is presented, and the patient usually presses a button when they hear the tone. The audiologist records the lowest possible level the patient consistently responds at to measure what is called their hearing thresholds.
