In my opinion, as mandarin is the official language of China for the present and as China is one of the birthplace for the four great ancient civilizations , it is indeed imbued with a great cutural deposits----though this land didn't be called "China" at first until 221BC. , the cuture conceived on this land has been passed down since the ancient time and always along with the people here.
So for the purpose of getting to know the rich culture ----either ancient or "somewhat form-changed" modern culture----as to widen one's horizon , it is worth while and somewhat necessary to learn mandarin. Thus mandarin will become more and more popular meanwhile as well as anyother language in the world as one of the result of man's constantly continuous spiritual civilization progress.
And also for another important reason : You will not clearly know the true picture of one country unless you investigate it yourself , and only when you contact with the natives there , you could get a better understanding about the nation not just mislead by some ex parte surfaces.
And visibly to learn mandarin is such a way to get a better understanding of China, thus the trend to learn the language will heat up and that just what its destiny is.
