The most famous shipwreck of all time is the RMS Titanic. The RMS Titanic was an Olympic Class passenger liner owned by the White Star Line and built by Harland and Wolf shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her maiden voyage was on April 10, 1912 and she sailed with 2,240 passengers and crew. She struck an iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14 and sank very early the following morning (around 2:00). Her wreck is located about 450 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. Over 1,500 people died in the sinking, (including more than 600 crew members, 536 third class, 166 second class, and 130 first class) making it one of the worst peacetime martime disasters in history. Many influential people were on board including multi-millionaire John Jacob Astor IV and his wife Madeline, millionaire Margaret Brown(unsinkable molly brown), industrialist Benjamin Guggenheim, Macy's Department store owner Isador Strauss and his wife Ida, Sir Cosmo Duff Gorden and his wife, the Countess of Rothes, and U.S. presedential aide Major Archibald Butt. The media frenzy surrounding the victims, the changes in maritime law, and the countless films and books created from the events onboard the Titanic are some of the reasons why its fame has increased nearly a century after its initial demise.
