For many years from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, people could see nothing wrong with employing children of 8 or 9 in factories. This is child labor, and unlike an adult worker who chooses where to work and whether he attends on any given day, children were virtually slaves in the factory (compelled to attend and work a 12-hour day) but were sometimes paid a tiny amount.

There is a parallel between child labor in England and slavery in the US insofar as somebody had the original idea to do it, had support for his idea at the time, and for many years, nobody could see anything wrong with it
