Regicide is usually considered to be the murder of a reigning monarch or other hereditary ruler.
Two examples:
Charles I of England tried by a tribunal headed by Oliver Cromwell. Charles was beheaded at Whitehall (London) in 1649.
The murder of Czar Nicholas II and his family on order of Lenin in 1918
Both Cromwell and Lenin are considered to be regicides. Whether they were justified in their actions is a matter of opinion.
