The protection treaty signed in 1885 between Maharero, the Herero chief, and the Germans established a protectorate over the Herero territory in present-day Namibia. Under the terms of the treaty, the Germans promised to protect the Herero from external threats, while the Herero recognized German authority and ceded certain rights over their land. This agreement was part of a broader strategy by Germany to expand its colonial influence in Africa, but it ultimately led to significant conflicts and the exploitation of the Herero people.

Genocide Genocide
The Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide and the Armenian genocide.
At the time of European contact, The Herero or Herero were nomadic herdsman who lived in Namibia and Botswana. The ethnic was shared by groups surrounding them. Brittan showed a lack of interest in the predominantly desert area of South West Africa and thus was declared a German protectorate in 1884 and named German South West Africa. The mere fact the 'savages' had the audacity to challenge white claims of superiority and lands in 'their colony', enhanced racist attitudes which had always been rife amongst the settler population. This ignited the genocide. The Herero and Namaqua genocide is considered the first genocide of the 20th century.
The term fogotten holocaust is sometimes applied to any genocide that the writer or speakers believes is ignored.

The Namibia genocide, primarily targeting the Herero and Nama peoples by German colonial forces between 1904 and 1908, effectively ended due to a combination of military defeat and international scrutiny. The Herero and Nama resistance was ultimately suppressed, leading to the widespread extermination and displacement of these populations. Additionally, growing awareness and criticism of Germany's brutal tactics—along with shifting political and military priorities—contributed to the cessation of hostilities. By 1908, the focus of German colonial efforts shifted, marking the end of the genocidal campaign.
