The question is very broad, especially since there are viewed to be many types of suicidal motivation not easily understood in this country.

To the western world suicide is most often a way of either trying to punish others into feelings of guilt or a way of escaping what one can no longer deal with.

In Japan one famous method is generally associated with western pespectives on honor and bravery, but were more indicative of ones willingness to put aside selfish feelings for the demands of societal norms which placed high value in a sense of duty exemplified in the execution of self.

In the samurai code being allowed to kill oneself was actually preferable to banishment, and the resultant negativity which would thereafter be connected with the family of the man in question. A worse punishment yet was standard execution.
