Great Plains
Buffalo, specifically the American bison, primarily inhabit the Great Plains region of North America, which includes parts of the United States and Canada. They typically roam grasslands, prairies, and open forests, where they can find ample grazing opportunities. In addition to the Great Plains, small populations of bison can also be found in national parks and reserves across North America, such as Yellowstone National Park. Water buffalo, on the other hand, are found in Asia and parts of Europe, typically in wetland areas and rice paddies.

Before the arrival of the English in the early 17th century, various Indigenous peoples inhabited the land now known as the United States for thousands of years. These Native American tribes had diverse cultures and societies long before English colonization began in 1607 with the establishment of Jamestown. Their presence and history span from prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence indicating human activity in North America for at least 15,000 years.

They do not roam anywhere anymore. We effectively killed the species. There are some animals which we call "buffalo" which we created by taking the last of the buffalo and breeding them with cattle. This new species is the closest thing we have to the original buffalo, but they do not roam. They are mostly 'farmed' in limited space areas for meat. Some are kept in large parks, but their movement is not even close to the original 'roaming' their ancestors used to do.
