The fifty caliber simulator, during the 70's, had a gas operated simulater (like welding tanks) that hooked up to the machine gun. This was better than shooting blanks; no jamming, and the sound effect was .50 caliber! M60 machine guns used blanks...lots of jams. Machine gun simulations are used (or were used at one time) to simulate combat during maneuvers on military installations. MANY of those military installations are now closed, and a good portion of them are now college's and universities.

Live machine gun fire can reach sound levels between 140 to 190 decibels, depending on the specific type of firearm and ammunition used. This level of sound can cause immediate hearing damage or loss without proper ear protection. For context, sounds above 120 decibels can be painful to the human ear.

Literally, it would mean being shot with a machine gun: The soldier machine-gunned the enemy. Figuratively, it can relate to things making the same sound as a machine gun (a woodpecker machine gunned in the distance), or things coming at you too rapidly to deal with them individually: they machine-gunned suggestions at her.
