The O'Riains of Idrone in Carlow Ireland are said to have played a significant role in the work of St Patrick by providing him with horses used for transportation as this Italian went about Ireland preaching about the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. While many versions of the "Ryan" name exists throughout history the names O'Riain and O'Maoilriains represemt two separate branches of the name, the latter name is evident mostly in Tipperary and Limerick where they were local chiefs. After St Patrick's death, the family became some of the most dedicated followers of his teachings.
