In human anatomy, the fibula is a bone of the leg. It is situated lateral to the tibia (larger shin bone) and between the patella (knee) and ankle. The fibula is not as long, thick, or strong as the tibia, and does not provide weight support. However, the fibula assists with muscle structure, and can be utilized when large bone grafts are necessary.
Talus
The Etruscan fibula was made in ancient Etruria, a region located in what is now central Italy. This area was home to the Etruscan civilization, which flourished between the 8th and 3rd centuries BCE. The fibula, often a decorative brooch or clasp, reflects the advanced metalworking and artistic skills of the Etruscans.
A fibula
Joe Theismann of the Washington Redskins suffered a compound fracture of the right leg (fibula AND tibia) during a Monday night game against the New York Giants in 1985.
DL Tim Krumrie of the Cincinnati Bengals suffered a fractured fibula and tibia in Super Bowl XXIII against the 49ers. The instant replay angle showing the injury was so graphic, Krumrie's foot almost turned completely around, I still shudder when thinking about it. He needed surgery and a steel rod was implanted. He played another six seasons with the steel rod in his leg.

The fibula is one of the long bones in the leg, below the knee.
The fibula is located lateral to the tibia. In overall anatomical position, the tibia is medial in the body, and the tibia lateral. Both are located in the lower leg. The tibia articulates with the patella proximally, the fibula laterally, and the talus distally.
The distal articulation of the tibia and fibula means the place where the tibia and fibula form a joint at the end of the bones farthest from the origin of the limb. The distal articulation of the tibia and fibula is with the talus.
