Following the end of WW2, the US occupied Iwo Jima until 1968, when the island was returned to the authority of Japan. It is currently uninhabited with the exception of a Japanese naval air base, which is also used by US Military forces. Iwo Jima is off limits to civilian personnel, but a Marine Corp memorial on the site of the raising of the flag is regularly visited by US Marines.
