From the Online Etymology Dictionary:

; basket : 1229, from Anglo-Fr. bascat, origin obscure despite much speculation. Said by the Roman poet Martial to be from Celtic British and perhaps cognate with L. fascis "bundle," in which case it probably originally meant "wicker basket." But there is no evidence of such a word in Celtic. Basket case is 1919, Amer.Eng., originally a literal reference to quadriplegic veterans of World War I. Fig. sense of "person emotionally unable to cope" is from 1967. Note: One word had to be removed from the above in order for the etymology of this word to be accepted on WikiAnswers website, a word that can also be used as a bad word.
