The law of inertia is more popularly known as Newton's first law of motion. And that simply says that:

An object in motion tends to stay in motion or a body at rest tends to stay at rest unless otherwise acted upon by a net force.

This is important in day to day life because it says that when things are moving, like you walking or your car rolling, it will take some sort of braking force to stop that motion. Conversely, if you or your car is at rest, the law says you need to exert some force to get walking or put the pedal to the floor to get the car moving.

In sum you are exerting forces to stop or start motion of yourself or of objects all the time. And when you do that you are acknowledging the law of inertia.
