The Naval Warfare Designator for Submariners is a pair of Gold (Officer) or Silver (Enlisted) dolphins, each one abreast of the bow of a submarine.

There are many variants on the design, though most of us have always preferred the older, traditional design (see my Supervisor page). Some Officer's dolphins also include their specialty within the design, where the bow of a submarine is replaced by the specialty insignia, with the dolphins abreast of it. For example, the Engineer will have an encircled propeller with dolphins on either side, Supply Officer (Chop) a Supply Corps insignia, and a Submarine Doctor an oak leaf with a blue jewel thingie.

Newer variants also show a modern teardrop/cigar shaped hull to signify more modern boats, but I always preferred the old style with the Fleet Boat bow design.

The dolphins are used in the insignia because dolphins historically are considered friends of sailors, and submarines especially. Dolphins are constant companions riding a submarine's bow wave on the surface, and are usually around a boat at periscope depth as well.

There is no historical or traditional significance to the fouled anchor insignia. The fouled anchor (a line, chain, or rope wrapped around an anchor) got its start as a naval insignia as the official seal of the British Lord High Admiral Howard of Effingham (Charles Howard, 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham, Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624).Many U.S. Navy insignia and traditions are descended from the British Royal Navy, and the fouled anchor is one of them.It still remains as the official insignia of the Lord High Admiral of Great Britain.

When were the US Navy's enlisted submariners first allowed to wear silver dolphins?

I found that it was not until 1950 that enlisted Submariners were allowed to wear the silver dolphins as a breast insigna on their dress uniforms - replacing the silk, embroidered, sleeve insignia. A history of the US Submarine Insigna (on AboutSubs.com) also indicated that in 1943 an enlisted Submariner who wascommissioned as an officer could wear silver dolphins as a breast insigna until he earned his "gold" dolphins. AboutSubs.com also has examples of the various designs for the insignia.

What is the naval insignia for submarine?

The Submariner's insignia for most of the world's navies are the "dolphin" badge (U.S. Navy - Submarine Warfare Badge). The typical insignia denotes a pair of dolphins (traditionally dolphin fish (mahi-mahi), though bottle-nose are also used) abreast the bow of a submarine. Dolphins were chosen as they are considered not only good luck for submariners, they are also constant companions while at sea in areas where they're around. For the U.S. Navy, the Enlisted Dolphins are silver or pewter; Officers are gold. There is an enlisted example on my supervisor page.

Who wore eagle on both side of the head gear during the Vietnam war?

The eagle can be worn for other military purposes for different uniforms, the brass head piece ornament for example. But for RANK purposes, the spread winged eagle is a Colonel (referred to as a "full bird" Colonel) in the US Army, US Marine Corps, and US Air Force. In the US Navy this very same insignia is a CAPTAIN. A USA, USAF, USMC Lieutenant Colonel rank insignia is a silver oak leaf. In the US Navy this same insignia is a COMMANDER. A USA, USAF, USMC Major rank insignia is a gold oak leaf. In the US Navy this same insignia is a LIEUTENANT COMMANDER. Two silver bars side by side (like a railroad track) is a Captain in the USA, USAF, USMC. But in the US Navy, this insignia is a LIEUTENANT. One silver bar is a 1st Lieutenant in the USA, USAF, USMC. Not in the Navy; in the Navy this silver bar means LIEUTENTANT JUNIOR GRADE; better known to most folks as LTjg. One gold bar is a 2nd Lieutenant in the USA, USAF, USMC. In the Navy, it's an ENSIGN.
