The Tennessee Valley Authority was the brain child of Senator George Norris of Nebraska. He was a strong advocate of progressivism and economic planning and regional development engineered by the government. The TVA was centered in the Tennessee Valley in the southern Appalachians. The idea was to harness the rivers in the Valley that flooded every year. The government would construct a system of dams on the rivers to harness the power of the rivers to produce electricity. The power produced would be cheap electric power to one of the most poorest areas in the nation. Factories could be built to use the power and to hire the unemployed in the area. By running the TVA, the government would find out how costly producing energy really was and the electric companies could then be regulated to make sure they were not overcharging the consumer. While many thought this was just another socialistic plan of FDR and the liberals, the TVA became a tremendous success.
