The surgeon Antoine Louis who was the Secretary of the Surgical Academy, Paris, is credited the design of the prototype; together with the German engineer and harpsichord maker Tobias Schmidt who built it.

Doctor Joseph Ignace Guillotin whose name it bears was a physician and professor of anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. He was also a politician who lobbied to abolish the death penalty. He became one of the 10 deputies of Paris in the Assemblée Constituante and knowing that he could never remove the death penalty, he wrote a paper calling for a more humane, efficient and mechanically consistent method of execution to be made available to all.
