The Asian American movement was driven largely by student activists invigorated by anti-Vietnam war and black power movements. Challenging stereotypes about Asian "passivity" and rejecting labels such as "oriental," Asian American activists mobilized this new consciousness to demand an end to racist hiring practices, biased school curricula, demeaning media stereotypes, residential discrimination, and the gentrification of historically Asian American neighborhoods. And even though it was mostly a youth movement, it could be argued that the Asian American movement transformed older community institutions, created new ones, and dramatically advanced the position of Asian American power in American urban politics.
There are misconceptions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders belonging to a single Asian American culture because they look similar. However, their cultures are very different as they come from different parts of the world.
Many Americans have a better memory of African-American discrimination than the Asian-American discrimination because it seems more real to them to their day to day life.

May is the month that Asian and pacific islanders celebrate there entrance into America, the land of the free. History is very interesting and is well documented for further information.
Most Westerners barely know their own history, let alone the history of a different group of people from themselves. Western failure to know the History of Islam is quite strongly matched by Western failure to know South Asian History, Southeast Asian History, African History, Latin American History, East Asian History, Central Asian History, and, in some cases, Eastern European History. Conversely, I have discovered that most Muslims only have a general understanding of European History and even that history is based on Imperialist interactions and not based on domestic Western activities and views. The bottom line is that people everywhere are disinterested in learning history, especially of others.
