Just prior to WWII (Prior to Pearl Harbor) US volunteers were flying P40 Warhawk fighter planes over the skies of China. They wore leather flying jackets and had a message written in Chinese on the backs of their leather jackets. These men were called the AVG (American Volunteer Group), better known as the "Flying Tigers."

The message said something similar to this: "I am an American pilot fighting for China, against your enemy, the Japanese. Help me reach friendly lines, and you will be financially rewarded."

This message written on the back of their leather flying jackets was called a "Blood Chit."
