It is often called the "Dark Ages" because mankind's foreword progress seemed to have stalled during that period of time. There were many upheavals in governments/rulerships and these political situations were the prime concerns rather than the pursuit of knowledge, arts, and human progress.

There is disagreement with the notion of dark ages, and this term is now often avoided because of its negative connotations and because it is inaccurate and misleading. It has been pointed out that in this 'era' (the Middle Ages) there where there were periods of cultural revival (the Carolingian Renaissance and the Renaissance of the 12th Century). The term also was used in an undifferentiated way.

The Middle Ages are now divided into two periods. One is Low or Early Middle Ages, which goes up to the 11th century. The other is High or Late Middle Ages (11th to 15th centuries).
